Mélissa Simard: Educational Technologist and Instructional Designer, My Portfolio

My name is Mélissa Simard. I have a background in teaching cooking and organizing events and tours centered around food through ‘Round Table Tours. I was ushered into the world of instructional design and educational technology by some prominent women in the field as I had already been creating learning experiences for years rooted in the senses, story, pleasure and relationships. I bring a penchant towards making learning and training light and pleasurable as well as the structure and know-how acquired during an MA in Educational Technology at Concordia. I am here to design and implement training, learning, guiding, curating experiences and evaluation solutions with you based on your particular needs. I have delivered to individuals, in many corporate settings but also worked in community organizations and non-profits for years and as a doula and love mandates with a social or advocacy mission as well. I come with curiosity to all challenges and entering diverse spheres and contexts around the world. I am fully bilingual in French and English and speak Spanish fluently. Below is my portfolio containing needs assessments, high level design and detailed design plans as well as evaluation plans and a taste of prototypes in my detailed design.

Evaluation Plan: This is a plan to evaluate the virtual farmer’s market with home delivery run by Coop CAUS that were the first farmer’s market in Montreal to pivot quickly during the pandemic to offer online purchase of the market products, with home delivery and to extend their season.

Performance Needs Assessment: This is a performance needs assessment that looks beyond training and instruction to raise performance for parents looking for find the best educational option for their children and reduce dissatisfaction with the results of their choice by identifying where support, resources, knowledge or motivation is needed as well as by identifying environmental and organizational roadblocks.

High Level Design (HLD): This is a performance Improvement campaign for parents in choosing and obtaining satisfactory educational options for their children.

Detailed Design: This detailed design gives a preview of two aspects of a one-stop central portal to help parents find and register for multiple schools in one place.

Deliverables Teen and Parent: This is an instructor’s manual complete with slides and exercises for a media literacy campaign designed during a course about designing an instructional message. This was my part in the group project and focuses more on online safety and the social undercurrents of social media.

OER Self-Reflection Guide: This is a guide to help instructors ask themselves questions to evaluate whether OER (Online Educational Resources)  are benefiting them or burdening them and how they do or do not align with their values. The goal of this is to identify how one uses OER, how beneficial it is and where use can be optimized.

OER Needs Assessment Quiz: This is a quiz to help instructors understand and assess their needs for OER (Online Educational Resources) in the classroom. It was also done on Quilt, but I have chosen to share the more basic and probably stable version on GoogleForms.

OER for Classroom Use Module Review: This is a chart that explores some of the topics connected to OER for Instructors (Online Educational Resources) and lists benefits as well as hacks/resources for avoiding problems.

Doula Training Evaluation Re-Design: This is an evaluation of a Doula Core Training Program. It identifies many of the strengths and what we can learn from the thoughtfully and deliberately unconventional approach as well as where it can be bolstered or there may be room for re-design.

Virtual and in-person food exploration and activities: I have been organizing cooking workshops, food tours, guided tastings both in-person and virtually for over 10 years. Through a unique blend of storytelling, tasting and human connection I create learning, leisure and networking experiences that are anchored in pleasure, the senses and the affective.

I have developed my Human Performance Technology (HPT) skills by learning how to map the experience of the users, where they encountered barriers, and to reflect on how to remove those barriers by supporting them outside of using an instructional strategy.

Skills that I bring to Human Performance Technology that I have acquired outside of my MA in Educational Technology studies are my experience in the business world and the ability to identify a client’s needs, how to conduct interviews and straddle resolving the problems of the user while catering to the sponsor and stakeholders. I am able to develop projects and products in a systematic way, gather resources and people on a project. I am also an idea person and able to see a path at an impasse and propose solutions. Because I wear so many hats in my life, I consider that I have a broad view that straddles business, community, advocacy, pleasure and family. This gives me a certain versatility. Although, I try to be grounded in reality, I am not such a perfectionist or realist that I resist doing things that haven’t been done, to make mistakes or get feedback which is part of growth and mending problems.
